Female Footy at the Ashy Redbacks is shaping up to be bigger and better in 2024. Be a part of it!
We love young females embracing our great game of AFL and we have an exceptional program which allows any female who would like to try footy to feel welcome and give footy a go in a safe, friendly environment.
Our girls love to have fun, but they also know they take their footy seriously. Ashy values all females as an integral part of our club and we actively support them as they become successful footballers.
And what success we had in 2023! For the second successive year in our club’s history, we fielded six girls teams including an U11 girls team.

Under 10
Under 11
Under 12
Under 13
Under 14
Under 16
Youth Girls (Under 18)
Our football league is the Yarra Junior Football League, otherwise known as the YJFL. Our games are played on a Sunday from April through until September.
Rules
YJFL has a set of Altered Rules for Girls. There are 16 players on the ground, kicking off the ground is now allowed and there is tackling… our girls love it!
In Season Training
Everyone has to start somewhere. Our AFL accredited coaches will teach you the correct techniques, help you gain match fitness and the confidence to be playing by the start of the season.
Training times will be listed on our website under Season 2024/ Preseason Training Timetable and Season 2024 / In-season Training Timetable (this information will be launched once it is known to us). We aim for girls to train on the same night as it enables simulated match play within sessions and appropriate age based skill development.
Uniform
Uniform and other club merchandise is ordered online through our Club website.
The only 'must have' items players need are: Socks and Red Shorts (Home). The Club supplies playing jumpers. Mouth guards and footy boots are also compulsory.
Pathways
Girls junior footy is not limited to playing for our Club. For those with emerging talent, the YJFL has a representative side, competing each year against teams from other football regions.
We have current Ashy females in the Youth Girls Academy at Sandringham Dragons and Oakleigh Chargers as well as a former Ashy players, Steph Harvie, who played at VFL sides Eastern Devils and is now with Essendon FC, and Millie Klingbiel joined Geelong Cats VFL in 2017 and in 2019 joined Richmond VFL, which is now part of the AFLW.
Eliza McNamara became our first ever AFLW player and is currently listed with the Melbourne Demons. More recently Jaz Fleming was drafted to the Hawthorn Hawks in 2022.
