We have a very special round every season dedicated to one of our former players who very sadly passed away at a very young age.
Round 12 is dedicated to Daniel Lagastes, former player and much loved member of the Ashy Redbacks. For those of you who may not know Daniel’s story, we would like to share it with you on behalf of his loving parents, Joanne and Marty.
In July 2006, Daniel passed away after collapsing at home after returning from a run. He was 14 years old. The Daniel Lagastes Medal Round was created in memory of Daniel, an accomplished footballer, cricketer, and model student who left a legacy defined by intelligence and perseverance, showing many outstanding qualities on and off the field. A student of De La Salle College and a loyal Redbacker, Daniel’s family, brother’s Harrison and Joel and parents’ Marty and Joanne, are still very much a part of the Ashy family. The family still appreciate the amount of support bestowed on them by the Club, where Daniel’s wake was held, during this very difficult time.
“We have always appreciated the chance to talk about Daniel because we never want him to be forgotten – and he never will be. What happened was difficult to deal with but he was around for 14 years and he achieved so much in that time. We celebrate his memory and his legacy.” - Marty Lagastes
Marty and his family attend the U15 games in Round 12 and they choose the player they feel is representative of the Lagastes Medal. Please join us on Sunday evening 23rd July from 5.30pm where we will announce the U15 recipients (Boys & Girls) of the Daniel Lagastes Medal.
